How to Get Started with Family Chiropractic Care
How to Get Started with Family Chiropractic Care
When you're considering chiropractic care for your family, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Every family member may have different concerns, schedules, and health goals, so family chiropractic care isn't about finding a plan that works for everyone.
Instead, getting started is about finding a qualified provider, understanding what to expect, asking thoughtful questions, and choosing an approach that fits into your family's broader healthcare and wellness routine.
1. Start With Your Family's "Why"
Before choosing a chiropractor, think about what brought you to consider care in the first place.
Maybe you're looking for support with a specific concern, want to learn more about chiropractic care for your family, or are simply exploring options that may fit your wellness goals.
Knowing what you hope to accomplish can help you have a more productive conversation with your chiropractor. Consider asking yourself:
Which concerns or goals brought us here?
Which family members are considering care?
What would we like to better understand?
How could care realistically fit into our schedule?
You don't need to have all the answers before your first appointment. Your chiropractor can help you understand your options.
2. Choose a Chiropractor You Feel Comfortable With
Choosing a chiropractor is an important part of getting started. Look for a licensed provider with education and experience that are appropriate for the members of your family who may be receiving care. If you're considering care for a child or during pregnancy, ask about the provider's experience and any additional training relevant to that stage of life.
It's also worth paying attention to communication. A good first conversation should give you an opportunity to explain your concerns, ask questions, and understand the provider's approach to care.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) recommends considering a practitioner's training, experience, and ability to communicate with other healthcare providers when choosing complementary care.
3. Know What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment should be more than simply walking in and receiving an adjustment. Depending on your individual situation, the visit may include a discussion of your health history, concerns, goals, and daily activities, followed by an appropriate examination or assessment.
This is also your opportunity to understand what your chiropractor is recommending and why. Before moving forward, you should feel comfortable asking:
What does the assessment involve?
What type of care are you recommending?
Why may this approach be appropriate for me or my family members?
How often might visits be recommended?
What should I expect during follow-up visits?
You don't have to be an expert in chiropractic care to ask questions. An informed conversation is an important part of making healthcare decisions.
4. Remember That Family Care is Not One-Size-Fits-All
Seeing a chiropractor as a family doesn't mean everyone receives the same care. An infant, teenager, parent, and older adult can have very different health histories, activities, concerns, and goals. Recommendations should take those differences into account.
That's why it's important to look for a practice that takes time to understand each individual rather than treating the family as one unit.
5. Keep Chiropractic Care Part of the Bigger Picture
Chiropractic care can be one part of a family's overall approach to health. Many of our patients find that their chiropractor is able to help with a lot more than just back pain but when needed is more than willing to refer to other healthcare providers.
Keep your healthcare providers informed about the complementary care you're considering. Let your chiropractor know about your health history, current medications, and supplements so they can better understand your needs.
Working with your healthcare team helps everyone make better-informed decisions about your care.
6. Find a Routine That Works for Your Family

Once you've decided that chiropractic care is appropriate for your family, consider how it will fit into everyday life.
Between school, work, activities, appointments, and everything else families manage, a routine needs to be realistic. Scheduling appointments in a way that works for your household can make it easier to stay organized and consistent.
Family wellness also happens outside the office. Simple habits such as staying active, taking time to breathe deeply, getting adequate rest, and making time for healthy family activities can all be part of a broader wellness routine.
As Jeanne Ohm, D.C., wrote "Achieving health for our families is accomplished daily through the many choices me make."
