What Does A Prenatal Chiropractor Do?
What Does A Prenatal Chiropractor Do?
Pregnancy brings many changes to the body. As your baby grows, your posture, balance, movement patterns, and they way you carry your weight can change. These changes may contribute to common discomforts such as back, hip, pelvic, or neck discomfort.
A prenatal chiropractor is trained to provide chiropractic care that takes changes during pregnancy into account. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, prenatal care is adapted to your stage of pregnancy, comfort level, and individual needs.
What Is A Prenatal Chiropractic?
A prenatal chiropractor is a licensed chiropractor who has additional training or experience in caring for pregnant patients.
While general chiropractor care may address the spine, joints, and musculoskeletal system, prenatal chiropractic care takes the physical changes of pregnancy into consideration. This can include modifying positioning, techniques, and equipment to help you remain comfortable throughout your visit.
When choosing a chiropractic during pregnancy, look for someone with specific prenatal training and experiencing working with expecting parents. Some chiropractors also pursue training through association such as the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).
What Does A Prenatal Chiropractor Do?
A prenatal chiropractor may assess how your spine and pelvis are functioning and look at how pregnancy-related changes are affecting your movement and comfort.
Depending on your individual needs, an appointment may include:
Discussing your pregnancy, symptoms, and health history
Assessing spinal and pelvic function
Looking at posture, movement, and areas of discomfort
Using pregnancy-appropriate chiropractic techniques.
Adjusting positioning to accommodate your growing abdomen
Providing guidance on movement or supportive exercises when appropriate
The goal is not to treat pregnancy itself, but to provide individualized chiropractic care while your body is adapting to pregnancy.
What Problems Might Lead Someone to See A Prenatal Chiropractor?

Every pregnancy is different, and you don't have to be experiencing severe discomfort, many soon to be mothers are taking a proactive approach making comfort priority before pain sets in.
If you didn't know you can see a chiropractor during pregnancy there is still time. Some expecting parents seek care because of changes such as:
Low-back discomfort
Hip or pelvic discomfort
Neck or upper-back tension
Disrupted sleep
Changes in posture or movement
General musculoskeletal discomfort as pregnancy progresses.
Pregnancy can changes your center of gravity and place different demands on the muscles, joints, and ligaments that support your body. A prenatal chiropractor can assess these changes and determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for your individual situation.
How is Prenatal Chiropractic Care Different?
One of the biggest differences is how the care is adapted to pregnancy.
As your abdomen grows, lying or moving in certain positions may become uncomfortable. A prenatal chiropractor can use pregnancy-appropriate positioning, supportive pillows, bolsters, or specialized equipment when needed.
Your chiropractors should also communicate with you throughout the appointment. If a position or technique is uncomfortable, we can modify what we are doing to make you more comfortable.
How to Choose A Prenatal Chiropractor
When looking for chiropractic care during pregnancy, consider a chiropractor who has specific education and experience working with expecting parents. Some chiropractors take a special interest in prenatal and postnatal care and pursue additional training.
Professional designations and training you may come across include:
DACCP: Diplomate of the ICPA, representative of the highest level of advanced pediatric and prenatal training offered through the organization.
CACCP: Certified by the ICPA, reflecting advance training in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic care.
ICPA Member: A chiropractor who has joined the ICPA and has a professional interest in pediatric and family chiropractic care.
Webster Certified: A chiropractor who has completed Webster Technique training focused on the specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment associated with the sacral and pelvic region.
A chiropractic with prenatal training should also know how to adopt care as pregnancy progresses. This may include using pregnancy-appropriate tables, pillows, or positioning to accommodate a growing abdomen and modifying techniques for comfort.
Depending on your needs, they may also provide general movement, stretching, or exercise recommendations that are appropriate for pregnancy. When choosing a provider, don't be afraid to ask about their prenatal training, experience, and approach to care. You should feel comfortable asking questions and communicating what feels comfortable throughout your pregnancy.
When Should You Start Prenatal Chiropractic Care?

There isn't one specific week of pregnancy when everyone should begin chiropractic care.
Some people seek care early in pregnancy, while others begin later when changes in their body become more noticeable. Others may already be receiving chiropractic care and continue with pregnancy-specific modifcations.
The appropriate timing and frequency depend on your individual needs and the assessment of your chiropractor.
Is Prenatal Chiropractic Care Right For You?
If you're considering chiropractic care during pregnancy, start by finding a licensed chiropractor with appropriate prenatal training and experience.
Prenatal care is about more than one adjustment or one technique. It's about understanding how your body is changing and finding appropriate ways to support your comfort and mobility throughout pregnancy.
